Bass Anglers Federation Homepage
June 8, 2013 Cottonwood Cove, Lake Mohave
Written by Larry Holona

The Bass Angler's Federation launched 13 boats at safe light Saturday to predicted wind and an extremely hot June day.  85 degree water temps and 115 degree above water temps didn't seem to take anyone out of their game.  Lucky for all, the wind never got nasty and was barely a factor.  In fact, the stiff breeze was a blessing for all braving a stifling hot tournament day.  There are only 3 points tournaments left and with AOY on the minds of boaters and non-boaters in contention, Mohave looked like it might be the chance to break away.  As it usually goes, Lake Mohave was not kind to all.  One team was disqualified for bringing in 1 bass over the 5 fish limit, and another team broke down shortly after launch.  Here's the breakdown.

Congrats to Matt La-Chev-Ski and Ellison Hubbard taking the win with 14.23lbs!

Tim Meyers and Randall "The" Bruce showing off 2 of their 14.06lb bag.

Jiggin' Jim Shorts and Dave Naugle get 3rd with 13.92lbs.  Like everyone else, they can't shake Toby Robinson.

The Godfather and a 5.02lb Big Fish!

MAY 11, 2013 CALLVILLE BA...ER, UH, I MEAN ECHO BAY
Written by Larry Holona

Congratulations to Richard Powers and Deejay Evens For taking the win

Brent Becker showing off the winning Big Fish

Alan Zamora and Larry Holona show us there second place fish.

The Bass Federation held its May tournament at Lake Mead with a bit of confusion.  The scheduled event at Callville was moved due to a permit mix up and put us at launch with another local bass club.  Despite the crowd, it was a pretty stellar day on Lake Mead.  Calm waters, a slight breeze, and our first double digit above water temperature for the year led to a ton of fish caught.  In typical late spring time fashion, fish were caught all over in a variety of ways.  In the backs of cuts, on beds, and out on the points and secondary points with topwater, reaction, and finesse baits.  But, from the sounds of it, keeper fish were a little more harder to come by.  We were all spoiled by the awesome months of March and April and the 8 teams with over 10 pounds were probably scrambling for one kicker fish thinking it would take a possible 20 lb sack to win.  As it turns out, 11.82, brought in by the team of Richard Powers and Deejay Evans, was enough to take the victory.  Congrats, bros!  Here's the breakdown.  Total fish per team was not recorded.

Total weight Big Fish

1.  Bass Powers and Deejay Evans               11.82                       3.61

2.  Alan Zamora and Larry Holona                11.74                       3.66

3.  Bubba Becker                                      11.62                       4.30

4. Gary Freeman and Zach Holt                   10.89                       DNW

5. Keith Van Reil and Matt Durham               10.83                      DNW

6. Anthony Salazar and Randall Bruce            10.63                      DNW

7. Rob Jeanotte and Dallas                          10.13                      3.39

8. Don Hill and Henryk Grybz                        10.08                      4.16

2013 Club Challenge on Lake Mohave
Written by Larry Holona

Paul Hemsley and Matt Durham showing most of their 15.90lb bag.

The 2013 Club Challenge turned out to be a great success for the Nevada Bass Angler's club.  In the days prior to the tournament, the temps were steadily rising, and word from some of the pre-fisherman were "the bass are moving up".  In typical February fashion, a cold front moved in and all the talk was about how tough the fishing was going to be.  Las Vegas Bass, Nevada Bass Anglers, and Bass Anglers Federation combined for a 30 boat field and the top 5 weights from each club would determine who takes the traveling toilet seat trophy.  These top 5 anglers would combine for an awesome 189.29 total weight for one cold, windy, pre-spawn day on Lake Mohave.  Asa Stevenson and his partner Kevin brought in the big bag for Las Vegas Bass with a total weight of 10.39 lbs.  For BAF, Paul Hemsley and Matt Durham weighed a 15.9 lb bag after a 2 dead fish penalty.  Big bag of the tournament went to Ron and Logan Branscom, representing Nevada Bass Anglers, with a solid 17.46 lbs.  Here are the results...

Kieth Van Reil and Larry Holona weighed in 12.92lbs  to take the WIN...

Gary Freeman and Ellison Hubbert weighed in 11.01 to take second place.

It was a crisp Saturday morning and the weather cooperated with temperatures in the 30's at the start of the day.  Ten boats showed for the start of the 2013 season.  Calville Bay was selected for the first tourney and with the water temps in the high 50's, it was thought to be a day of grinding out five fish.  At the start, boats went in every direction and, without wind, the whole lake was available.  At the weigh in, we were short one boat and learned Dave Hudson and Rusty Ruby had engine failure.  Limping back to Calville from Temple Bar, Dave and Rusty failed to make it in time to weigh in two fish.  We got word that they made it through the narrows at the conclusion of weigh in, and showing exceptional leadership skills, our newly appointed president, Doug Jones, raced out to tow them in as the sun quickly set.  Landing in third place with 9.57 lbs. was Toby and Meek with a nice 4.7 lb. largemouth.  Gary and Ellison came in second with 11.01 lbs.  And, winning the second tourney in a row with a big fish of 5.15 lbs. and 12.92 lbs. total was Keith and Larry.  Congratulations to Keith and Larry.  Keith, a.k.a. KVR, said that his boat sat for 10 months before he came out to fish our December tournament.  Winning two tournaments in a row with solid kicker fish after that long of a layoff is paramount. So expect to see him fish like he's got a target on his back this year.  A special thanks to Paul and Zach Holt for being the launch boat and weigh masters.   Expect to see a lot of new faces this year and let's all do our part to help those new to our club experience a great day on the water.  Welcome to 2013 with the Bass Anglers Federation.
